Purpose of the Position

The Advocacy and Policy Manager provides leadership and operational management of the Advocacy and Policy portfolio of Dietitians Australia and is a critical member of the Management Team. 

Key areas of involvement will include, but not be limited to: public health nutrition, food regulation, workforce, quality, guidelines, key messages and background statements. 

The Advocacy and Policy Manager will, at times, represent the organisation in dealing with government, regulators and other stakeholders across the diverse areas related to dietetic practice including health, food supply and education.

Key Responsibilities - Management

  • Provides high level advice on advocacy and policy services to the Dietitians Australia Board and Management Team, and reports to and attends the Board meetings as required.
  • Works in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and the Management Team to ensure successful implementation of operational plans.
  • Manages the staff and activities of the Advocacy and Policy portfolio, providing support, direction and regular performance review for staff and consultants.
  • Leads development, implementation and evaluation of strategy and operational plans, specific activities and reports on performance measures on a regular basis to Chief Executive Officer.
  • Manages the allocated budget for the Advocacy and Policy portfolio including relevant reports on a regular basis as required by the Chief Executive Officer and the Dietitians Australia Board.
  • Provides high level support, advice and liaison with the various committees and working parties of the Dietitians Australia Board forms to support the communication, marketing and members services activities of Dietitians Australia.

Key Responsibilities - The Portfolio

  • Represent Dietitians Australia in forums and meetings and advocate on behalf of Dietitians Australia and its members as requested by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Take responsibility for the delivery of specific projects.
  • Provide timely reports and evaluations of the Policy and Advocacy Portfolio programs to inform the membership of progress towards agreed goals.
  • Coordinate through the policy team the research, consultation and drafting of background statements, submissions, reports and presentations as required.
  • Work with the Management Team to ensure relevant and timely stakeholder communication in regard to policy and advocacy achievements.
  • Ensure evidence-based advice is provided to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board on the nutritional implications of food policy and the professional implications of health policy.
  • Ensure appropriate communication with members and provide advice as required.
  • Identify opportunities in line with the strategic objectives of Dietitians Australia.

Key Responsibilities - The Association

  • Liaise with the members of the Management Team to ensure consistency in policy and positions across all aspects of the Dietitians Australia operation and to maximise opportunity for and communication with members.
  • Liaise and collaborate with other staff to contribute to the effective and efficient management of the functions of the Dietitians Australia office.
  • Participate in the Dietitians Australia committees and working parties and provide support to committees, working parties and representatives as required.

  • Ensures regular review of all Dietitians Australia policies and procedures relating to area of responsibility.

A competitive salary package will be negotiated with the successful candidate (as a guide the position will be EL2 equivalent).

  • This role will be based at our National Office in Canberra.  
  • Flexible working arrangements may be considered.
  • Domestic travel will be required.
  • Up to 30 hours per week.

Essential Qualifications/Skills (Selection Criteria)

  • A sound knowledge of the Australian Health System and food supply sectors and their networks and processes, including regulatory and funding aspects.
  • High-level oral and written communication skills, including negotiation skills and capacity to prepare evidenced based reports and submissions to all levels of Government.
  • Demonstrated ability in strategic, analytical and creative thinking, with the ability to understand and make sound judgments about the political, social and organisational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and accurately, prioritising workflow to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Experience in managing teams.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to provide leadership and support other members of the Dietitians Australia Management Team, Board and Committees.
  • A commitment to building a positive workplace culture.
  • Enthusiasm to work co-operatively to achieve objectives.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including the demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders including volunteer committees, senior policy advisors, government, non-government, community and private sectors and consultants, as well as with the team of paid staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in internal and external advocacy activities.
  • Demonstrated negotiating skills.
  • Demonstrated financial management skills

Desirable Qualifications/Skills

  • Qualifications in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications in health, medicine or allied health profession.
